The Clean City Program provides over 250 trash and recycling barrels and approximately 70 Big Belly Solar compactors in place throughout the city in areas of heavy pedestrian traffic and in city parks in an effort to prevent litter. These receptacles are emptied through a contract with Waste Management, Inc.

The Big Belly solar compactors, both for regular trash and recycling, line the majority of The Broadway and Thames Corridors. In the first year of implementation of these compactors, The City realized a reduction in pickups of 65% in the summer months (from 14 per week to 4-5) and 80% in the winter months (from 14 pickups per week to 1-2).

Clean City has a small staff of seasonal employees who manually pick up litter during the busy season.
