City Manager appoints Interim Fire Chief Brian T. Dugan, Sr. to position of Fire Chief of the Newport RI Fire Department.

The City Manager announced that he has appointed Interim Fire Chief Brian T. Dugan, Sr. to the permanent position of Fire Chief of the Newport Fire Department. A formal swearing-in ceremony will be scheduled in the next several weeks.  The selection of Chief Dugan follows a search process that attracted many qualified candidates.

An interview panel was formed and the City Manager conducted final interviews of the top candidates.  Interim Fire Chief Brian T. Dugan, Sr. was selected as the most qualified and best candidate for appointment.

Chief Dugan began his career as a firefighter with the Newport Fire Department in 1992. In 2006 he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and served for two years in that capacity.  Chief Dugan served as a Fire Captain from 2008 until 2011 and was then promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief.  Chief Dugan is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, and holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Science, and an Associate Degree in Forestry as well as an Emergency Medical Technician certification.  Throughout his career, Chief Dugan has displayed a thorough knowledge of firefighting operations, project management and administrative skills, and the development of several systems and procedures to standardize training and professional development programs and increased certification levels within the Newport Fire Department.
