Eisenhower Park Lampposts Illuminate Park

With the flick of a switch Tuesday, August 8, Eisenhower Park in Washington Square is once again illuminated in the evening light.  Eleven new decorative lampposts with energy efficient LED lanterns were installed in the park in order to replace the less efficient gas lighting previously existing in the space.  The lighting matches those lights that were previously installed throughout Washington Square during its recent revitalization.   The project was designed and installed by staff members from the City of Newport Department of Public Services with electrical services provided by Toner Electric of Middletown, RI.  The City of Newport was awarded a $100,000 historic passive grant from the RI Department of Environmental Management’s 2014 recreation grant program.  The former fixtures and lanterns will be recycled and reused throughout the city primarily being used for maintenance and repairs to existing  gas lights.  The new installation includes outlets for holiday lights as well additional circuits for special event power source.
